Lutsk is the capital of Volyn Region. The population of the city is over 200.000. The city is believed to be founded by Kyivan Prince Volodymyr /7-1015/ in 1000. The name of Lutsk came from the Ukrainian word "luka" /a meadow near the river/. Lutsk has been known since 1085. In the 14th century Lutsk was under the Lithuanian rule. After the Liublin Union of 1569 Lutsk became a Polish town. In 1795 as a part of the Western Volyn Lutsk was united with Russia. In 1921 after the Treaty of Riga Lutsk again became a Polish town. In 1939 as apart of the Western Ukraine the town was united with Ukraine as a capital of Volyn Region. Lutsk is one of the industrial centers of the Western Ukraine. The major industries include machine engineering and metal-working. The Lutsk Automobile Plant produces motorcars of higher practicability. Lutsk is one of the cultural and educational centers of the Western Ukraine It boasts of the Lesia Ukrainka Teachers Training Institute, the Volyn" Ukrainian Drama Theatre, the Philharmonic Society, the Volyn Museum of Regional Studies. The city boasts of many monuments of architecture: the Upper Castle /13th c. /, Puzyna House /16-18 cc./, churches and a monastery of the 16th century. The Volyn Region includes 15 districts, 10 towns, 20 settlements and 1045 villages. Horokhiv is a district town on the Lypa River. The town has been known since 1240. Kamin-Kashyrsky is a district town on the Tsyr River. The town has been known since 1196 as a fortress of Kashyra. The fortress was ruined by the Horde. It was rebuilt in the 15th century. The town and the fortress became the center of the estate of the Russian feudals Sangushski-Kashyrskis. The town boasts the wooden Church of Natality /1723/. Kovel is a regional and district town. It has been known since 1310. The legend has that the town was founded by Danylo of Halytsia. Before the battle he ordered smith / "koval" in Ukrainian/ Volia to forge a sward. The smith made a good sward but refused to take money. After the victory Prince Danylo of Halytsia ordered to build a town near the smithy of Volia. Kolky is a settlement of Manevych district. It has been known since the 16th century. It is situated on the Styr River in the birch groves /"kolky"/. Kivertsi is a district town and a railway junction. It came into being in 1870. The town got its name from the Tivertsi - a Slav tribe that lived here in the old times. In the 10th century Tivertsi became part of the Kyivan Rus. Torchyn is a settlement of Lutsk district. It has been known since 1230. It got its name after the Torks, a Turkic tribe who lived in the 10-13th cc. near the Ros River and in the basin of the Siverskyi Donets'. Volodymyr Volynskyi is a district town on the Luha River in the basin of the Vistula. It was founded by Volodymyr Sviatoslavych. It has been known since 988 as a town- fortress of Volodymyr. In 1795 the town was annexed to Russia. It go the name Volynsky to be distinguished from Vladimir -upon the Kliazma in Russia. The town boasts of the Assumption Cathedral of 1160.
